ExxonMobil promises compatibility in 2020 portfolio

Compatibility of compliant fuels available at different ports – even from the same supplier – has been a concern for ship owners preparing for the new legislation in 2020. ExxonMobil’s offer of exclusively residual fuels means there will be fewer challenges around blending aromatic and paraffinic products. Residual fuels are also cheaper to produce than middle distillates such as diesel.

“These fuel formulations have passed stringent testing protocols, helping to ensure the highest level of quality during challenging times,” said Luca Volta, marine fuels venture manager, ExxonMobil. “We are continuing to work on new streams that will provide availability to additional ports and markets.”

The company made the announcement as it revealed more details of the availability of its compliant fuels. Ports in Antwerp, Rotterdam, Genoa and Marseilles in Europe, along with Singapore, Laem Chabang in Thailand and Hong Kong, will all offer 0.5% sulphur grades in time for the 1 January 2020 deadline.

ExxonMobil said that the fuels had all undergone assessments to make sure that they are fit for use and can be used safely and efficiently by vessel operators. Specifications will range from RMD 80 to RMG 380, with a density of between 900 and 970 at 15°C. Catalytic fine content will meet the level set out in ISO 8217:2017.

The supplier said it would also provide a range of cylinder and engine oils to complement its compliant fuels.
