Second big Genting refit for Lloyd Werft

It is the second time in a year the German yard has refurbished a cruise ship from Crystal Cruises, which like LWB is now part of the Genting Group. Last year the yard docked the 51,040gt Crystal Symphony, also in its Kaiserdock II graving dock, for similar interior and ship work.

Earlier this year LWB reported it would also be involved in some of the finishing work on Genting’s 204,000gt Global Class ships being built by the owner’s other German shipyard group, MV Werften, in east Germany.

A quay facility next to LWB is now undergoing a €30 million renovation for the purpose. MV Werften told The Motorship the first Global ship will go to Bremerhaven after sea trials in late 2020.

A preparatory team from LWB went on board Crystal Serenity in Lisbon before it sailed to north Germany earlier this month. The ship will stay in Bremerhaven until 6 November for work LWB says will cost “several million euro”.

Interior refurbishment, including the conversion of some cabins into penthouse suites, is being carried out directly by Crystal Cruises and its partners. LWB is tackling the shipbuilding aspects as well as project logistics.

Sven May, technical director, LWB told The Motorship the shipbuilding work included the renewal of support bearings on the ship’s Rolls Royce Mermaid azimuthing propulsion pods. Also for completion was the renewal of stabiliser hydraulic motors and seals, boiler repairs along with boiler and sea valve overhaul, and the renewal of engine room and superstructure piping.

Below surface repairs, tank conservation, and repainting of the hull above the waterline will also be carried out, May said.
