LR developing standards for hydrogen-based fuel

The project is seeking to obtain approval in principle for the use of LOHC technology on ships. The project will cover the refuelling of vessels with LOHC, the storage of LOHC on board the vessel as well as the process of power generation.

LOHC is an innovative hydrogen-based fuel, created by the hydrogenation of a liquid energy carrier to create a chemically bound liquid fuel. The fuel can then be transported at normal temperatures and pressures. The liquid energy carrier is also compatible with existing bunkering infrastructure.

In September 2018, H2 Industries announced a collaboration with Netherlands-based inland transportation company, PortLiner, to develop all-electric LOHC-fuelled cargo barges to service the European inland waterway market.

LR published provisional safety standards governing LNG powered ships with regasification systems in January 2014, and provisional safety standards for methanol powered ships in January 2016.
