OSC orders two VLCCs from DSME

The 336-metre long, 60-metre wide VLCCs will be built at Okpo Shipyard in Korea and are scheduled for completion in the last quarter of 2020. OSC has the option of ordering a third vessel.

DSME notes that the new VLCCs are being built to the same specifications and design as the company’s other VLCCs since 2018. This standardisation is helping to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of the project, offsetting upward pressure from raw materials and labour costs.

The ship includes eco features, and the design is expected to be compliant with IMO emission requirements.

DSME established a relationship with the Gulf state in 2006, when it developed a repair shipyard and signed a long-term management contract. In 2008, OSC awarded DSME an order for five crude carriers.

DSME notes that the contract is consistent with its plans to focus on winning orders for LNG carriers, VLCCs and container ships in 2019.
