Russias USC develops variable-pitch propeller system

United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), a state-owned Russian corporation, which comprises almost 70% of Russia’s shipbuilding assets, has successfully developed and tested a low-noise variable pitch propeller prototype for the Russian navy designed for use with the navy’s corvette and frigate classes of warship.

The experimental work was carried out by a Moscow-based team working with USC’s Zvezdochka Ship Repair Centre subsidiary, testing a propeller prototype designed to work with a 20MW main engine. The propeller is understood to have met the Russian navy’s requirements.

The test’s results included reduced fuel consumption and longer service life. Owing to the product design, it eliminates the risk of discharge of lubrication oil from the stern tubes. The system is also designed to withstand unforeseen emergencies, with the system designed to remain operational even if an emergency shutdown closes the pitch adjustment systems.

USC is ready to begin production of the low-noise variable pitch propeller at the machine-building facilities of OZ Vega and CS Zvezdochka’s main works and would be able to supply commercial vessels.
