NYK orders first upgraded Newcastlemax type from JMU

After completion in 2021, the vessel will be assigned to a long-term transportation contract with JFE Steel Corporation.

The bulk carrier will be the first of the upgraded Newcastlemax class within an optimised hull envelope of just under 300m length overall by 50m breadth, maximised for bulk cargo shipments through Newcastle, the world’s largest coal export outlet.

The shipbuilder did not confirm whether the vessel would be constructed at JMU’s Tsu shipyard in Mie, which has handled the construction of several G209 BC design vessels in recent years.

Designated as the J211 BC, it combines increased deadweight with reduced fuel consumption compared with the preceding G209 BC design.

With main dimensions of 299.9m length, 50m beam, 25m depth and 18.4m draught, the J211 BC retains the dimensions of the G209 BC, while achieving an increase in absolute deadweight of about 1,000t.

Energy saving appendages have been incorporated at the aftermost end of the hull, and the superstructure has been formed so as to reduce wind resistance. The vessel features JMU’s proprietary bow shape and will be fitted with an exhaust gas cleaning system.

The cargo holds have been specially adapted for coal cargoes, and utilise corrosion resistant steel developed by JFE.

The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for the J211 BC meets Phase 2 criteria, 20% below the IMO reference line for bulkers built between 1999 and 2009. The design is also compliant with the harmonized common structural rules (HCSR).
