ABS and MOL sign next gen VLECs MoU

MOL is the largest VLEC operator in the world, and jointly owns six VLECs with a Singapore-based subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd.

The Motorship notes that ABS has been the classification society of choice for almost all of the VLECs in service, with the exception of INEOS’s recent DSIC-built 85,000m3 JS Ineos Marlin. ABS’s experience across the full scope of gas-related assets is particularly relevant given recent developments in dual-fuel engine technology. JS Ineos Marlin is powered by a MAN gas-injected, ME-GI two-stroke in its ethane-capable GIE version, for example.

The collaboration in the development of LNG carriers is also noteworthy. MOL Group has developed extensive experience and know-how as a leading LNG carrier owner and management company.

ABS will provide plan review, survey, inspection and other classification services for vessels, machinery and equipment as well as assist with managing the requirements for foreign flag carriers calling at US terminals.
