J-ENG awarded contract for new NYK heavy-lift vessels
The vessels will be equipped with 6UEC35LSE-Eco-B2-SCR engines. The 350mm bore engines enjoy a good reliability record, while the engines low fuel consumption also contributed to the customer’s decision. SFOC at 100% load is just 167g/kWh, while the engine can achieve SFOC of 157g/kWh at partial load of 75%. Further incremental improvements for engines optimised for low load operations can be achieved.
The fuel efficiency of the engines is a major contributor to ensuring that the next generation heavy-lift vessels’ cutting-edge new vessels will meet EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) Phase 3 requirements. The vessels will also achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption compared with existing heavy-lift vessels.
The manufacture of the UE engines will be undertaken by J-ENG licensees, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. (CSE) and Zhejiang Yungpu Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. (YHM). J-ENG notes that these licensees have shifted to a continuously production schedule to meet steady demand for smaller-size UE engine versions in China.
The vessels design has been optimised for the transport of wind-power and LNG plant components. The on-deck length will be about 110 metres, while the in-hold length will be about 95 metres, permitting loading of long cargo such as wind-power blades.
