KHI receives AIPs for LPG fuel supply system

KHI’s design is for an electronically controlled LPG injection marine diesel engine (ME-LGIP), the first order placed for an engine of this type in Japan.

ClassNK noted that the pressurised design was compatible with propane and butane, and that the system configuration could be applied to non-LPG carriers.

“LNG as fuel is attracting widespread attention as an environmentally friendly option, but LPG as fuel has advantages over LNG, including potentially reduced initial investment and simpler handling onboard. As a result, we believe LPG as fuel will prove increasingly attractive to the market in the future.,” said Hideaki Naoi, General Manager, KHI.

KHI announced in April 2019 that it had received its first ME-LGIP order from Singapore-based ship owner Kumiai Navigation for a seven-cylinder 600mm-bore ME-C10.5-LGIP engine. The engine has been ordered for a large gas carrier to be built at KHI’s shipyard. The engine will be manufactured at the Kobe Plant and is scheduled to be delivered in September 2020.
