LR grants AiP on NH3-fuelled MR tanker design

The approval represents the culmination of a joint development project between HMD, LR and MAN Energy Solutions into an ammonia-fuelled vessel design. The JDP was launched in October 2019.

In common with LR’s previous AiP for an NH3-fuelled bulk carrier, the design features MAN ES’s ammonia-fuelled dual-fuel engine concept.

While MAN ES was responsible for the development and specifications of the dual-fuel ammonia engine, HMD focused on the basic design of the ammonia-fuelled propulsion system.

LR adopted a risk-based approach to review the novel design and facilitated a high-level hazard identification (HAZID) workshop for the ammonia fuel supply system (and associated ancillaries) in accordance with the LR ShipRight Procedure for Risk Based Designs.

HMD and LR collaborated closely during the development of the shipyard’s LNG-fuelled MR tanker design, which received an AiP from LR in May 2019.

HMD notes that it planned to commercialise an NH3-fuelled vessel from 2025.
