Fincantieri signs deal to operate new shipyard in Mexico

Fincantieri will participate in the design and construction of the new shipyard, which will be built on reclaimed land near the existing port.

The Yucatan state government will directly manage the dredging and construction of infrastructure via a special purpose company. Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2021. The project is expected to be completed by 2027.

Two new 400 metre dry docks are being constructed as part of a $155 million expansion project at the Port of Progreso, near Merida, which will see up to 5 million m3 of material dredged from the port’s navigation channels.

When complete, the yard’s two masonry dry docks, the largest in the Americas, will be able to accommodate ships up to 400 metres long. The yard will also have a lifting platform for units up to 150 metres in length, as well as cranes, workshops, special equipment, offices, and warehouses.

Once the shipyard reaches full operational capacity, it will be able to support an estimated 700 full-time workers.
