Partnership to assess autonomous ships risk

Autonomous operation is a key focus for the shipping industry at the moment as it may prove a promising way to improve safety and working conditions by reducing human error in manoeuvring and other operations.

A safety evaluation is currently underway in Japan with the implementation of demonstration projects and a government-led development of the guidelines for autonomous ships.

The partners will pool their knowledge of ships and risk management to carry out optimal risk assessments. This work began in February 2021 with the aim of announcing the results at some point in 2022.
