EVERFUEL TO DELIVER HYDROGEN FOR PLANNED ZERO-EMISSION SHIP

The MOU has been signed with an undisclosed German-Norwegian shipping company, and Everfuel will be responsible for delivery of compressed hydrogen to the company which aims to become a leading zero-emission shipping company in Europe. Operation is expected to begin in early 2023 with an initial fuel-cell powered ship that will consume approximately 1,000 kg of hydrogen per day.

Jacob Krogsgaard, CEO of Everfuel, said the choice of compressed hydrogen rather than liquified hydrogen was based on the different energy and storage requirements of the two, with compressed hydrogen preferable when consumption is less than a ton a day. He sees the maritime industry looking to ammonia rather than liquified hydrogen for its long-range fuel needs.

Everfuel is well positioned to provide maritime fuelling solutions across Scandinavia and Europe. The company plans to initially supply hydrogen from its HySynergy facility in Fredericia, Denmark, using a new inhouse developed fuelling solution. The hydrogen will be available in port from a stationary container or via truck with as little infrastructure as possible installed on the dock.

Everfuel is leading the HySynergy project which involves the establishment of a 20MW Power-to-X facility that is expected to be operational in mid-2022. It will have a production capacity of up to eight tons per day of green hydrogen, made using wind and solar energy, with 10 tons of storage capacity.

HySynergy will help reduce the carbon footprint of Shell’s existing Fredericia refinery as well as establish a competitive supply of green hydrogen as zero emission fuel for heavy duty transportation. The plan is to expand the scope of the Power-to-X plant up to 1GW before 2030 and thereby contribute significantly toward the Danish government goal of 70% CO2 reduction. It also supports the European Union’s Hydrogen Strategy and its ambition to install at least 6GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers in the EU by 2024 and at least 40GW by 2030.

The project will demonstrate how the large-scale production of green hydrogen from fluctuating renewable energy sources can be converted and stored effectively to balance the time-difference between production and use of energy. Howden has been selected to deliver a hydrogen compression solution for HySynergy, and Nel will supply a 20MW electrolyser.

Everfuel is already supplying hydrogen for land-based transport, and most recently expanded operations with the launch of a roll-out plan for Sweden targeting up to 15 strategically positioned fuelling sites for zero emission transport by end of 2023. The network is part of Everfuel’s plan to invest EUR 1.5 billion in developing the green hydrogen value chain in Europe and reach EUR 1 billion in revenue from the sale of hydrogen fuel before 2030.
