Liquid Wind in offtake talks as first production project advances

The Swedish eMethanol developer plans to begin distribution of renewable methanol in early 2024, when its first commercial scale 50,000 tonne/year facility begins production in Örnsköldsvik, northern Sweden.

The eMethanol provides an alternative to fossil fuels and a potential pathway to reduce carbon emissions by over 90 per cent in marine transportation. eMethanol can also be used as a building block in the production of other sustainable chemicals.

Liquid Wind has confirmed that it is in discussions with large shipping companies regarding offtake of the fuel.

Worley will provide FEED services, including the project’s cost estimate. Worley will also develop a standardised design concept that can be replicated and utilized in Liquid Wind’s future developments. Liquid Wind has ambitious expansion plans, and aims to develop 10 facilities in Sweden and across Scandinavia more widely by 2030, supplying 500,000 t/yr of eMethanol.

The facility will use biogenic carbon dioxide from a municipal biomass-fired power plant as feedstock and combine it with green hydrogen, made from renewable electricity and water, to produce eMethanol. In addition to the 70MW PEM electrolyzer for the facility, Siemens Energy will supply the entire power distribution, electrification, instrumentation, motors, drives and plant-wide automation for the project.

The Liquid Wind consortium also includes Alfa Laval, Carbon Clean, Haldor Topsoe and Siemens Energy.
