Ammonia as a marine fuel in Singapore

Itochu has previously worked on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Vopak in June 2020 and now extends that collaboration to include Pavilion Energy, MOL and Total, all of whom are engaged in LNG bunkering in Singapore.

The MoU will focus on developing an ammonia fuel supply chain, including an on-shore and/or off-shore facility and an ammonia bunkering ship in Singapore. It is also a key element of an integrated project that includes the development of an ammonia-fuelled ship by Itochu and other partners.

Roles

Itochu and MOL will promote the development of an off-shore facility such as a floating storage unit or fuel supply ship whilst Itochu Enex, Pavilion Energy and Total will promote the development of an ammonia fuel supply chain. All five will be involved in devising safety guidelines whilst Total will also focus on the development of bunkering infrastructure.

Vopak will focus on developing an independent, on-shore facility for the storage and handling of ammonia with loading and un-loading facilities in Singapore by using its ammonia storage and handling expertise in its Banyan Terminal in Singapore.
