Fincantieri to co-develop steel-welding robot technology

The first joint project under the agreement is currently underway. The project involves the development of an anthropomorphic steel-welding robot, and a remote controlled tracked vehicle prototype. Tests related to the first development project, are scheduled at Fincantieri shipyards in the first half of 2022.

The two companies have agreed to collaborate in the subsequent production of a series of robots, to be implemented at first in Fincantieri shipyards.

Fincantieri and Comau will jointly own the knowhow and intellectual property generated while developing the new concept design. Fincantieri also identified the possibility of marketing the solutions for specialist steel construction applications, such as suspension bridge assembly as a potential commercial opportunity.

Fincantieri General Manager, Fabio Gallia, commented: “This partnership is an important innovation for the shipbuilding industry. Apart from improving the safety of workers and their ergonomic working conditions, these solutions will enable great progress in pursuing the competitiveness of our production system. Moreover, looking to the future, the possibility of developing projects together with Comau is a great opportunity to further broaden the Group’s range of competencies”.

The Motorship notes that Comau has extensive experience in the development of welding technology for assembly line based manufacturers, having supplied welding robots for automotive manufacturers, and has also developed specialist solutions for the assembly of electric motors and batteries.

In April, Comau signed an agreement with automation specialist Rockwell Automation to permit customers to programme Comau’s robot arms through Rockwell Automation controllers.
