Partners to design ammonia-fuelled tanker

The pilot is part of Norway’s Green Shipping Program and will include partners such as Equinor, DNV, Yara, Grieg and Altera Infrastructure. Breeze Ship Design will be responsible ship integration of the ammonia fuel and bunkering systems, as well as machinery and propulsion system.

The main objectives of the pilot project are to investigate the technical and economic applicability of ammonia engines, fuel and bunkering systems on a generic tanker design, understand operational safety requirements, and to solve security challenges in the design and identify barriers.

The ultimate goal of the pilot is to enable an Equinor chartered tanker to be powered by ammonia.

Currently, Breeze is engaged in several projects for the development of low- or zero emission vessels within the fishery, wind and energy, and coastal- and deep-sea shipping sectors.

The project is distinct from another – the Castor initiative – involving Jurong Port in Singapore, MISC Berhad, Lloyd’s Register, Samsung Heavy Industries, MAN Energy Solutions, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Yara International. The building of an ammonia-fuelled tanker for this project was announced early last year, with Lloyd’s Register approval in principle granted for the tanker design in September 2020 and the fuel supply and storage system a year later.

In another project, Grieg Edge and Wärtsilä are collaborating to develop a tanker vessel, the MS Green Ammonia which will both transport and be fuelled by green ammonia. It is expected to be in operation as early as 2024 and is part of the Zero Emissions Energy Distribution at Sea (ZEEDS) initiative.
