Kongsberg supplying technology for offshore wind vessels
The new WIV, which will service the US renewable energy market, is expected to be delivered in 2025. It marks the first step in Maersk Supply Service’s expansion plans as regards the US service sector within offshore wind, which is anticipated to grow to 30GW by 2030.
Kongsberg Maritime (KM) will supply the complete electrical system and the integrated control system for the WIV. The system will ensure optimal performance irrespective of weather conditions and sea states, says KM. It will also reduce OPEX while minimising the environmental impact of the vessel’s offshore operations. KM’s lifecycle management system will generate long-term savings and boost visibility while the WIV is in operation.
Further to the June 2021 announcement of the contract to design and equip two construction service operation vessels (CSOVs/SOVs) for Norway-based Integrated Wind Solutions, KM has announced a contract for integrated equipment packages for two further vessels in the series for delivery in 2024.
The vessels will be built to Kongsberg Maritime’s UT 5519 DE design by China Merchant Heavy Industries. The UT 5519 DE has a novel double-ended hull form and propulsion set-up. The vessels are built around a technological backbone provided by the comprehensive KM-supplied integrated equipment solution which includes permanent magnet azimuth thrusters, generators, electrical systems, a fully integrated bridge with navigation, dynamic positioning and automation systems, deck machinery equipment and control systems.
