ABS approves ammonia-fuelled ammonia/LPG carriers

The 40,000 cbm and 60,000 cbm capacity carriers were developed in cooperation with Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore (KSOE). The AiP is the completion of phase one of a joint development project among ABS, HHI, Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Phase 2 will begin with the development of engine specifications.

“In view of the recent development of alternative fuel related technologies and infrastructure, ammonia is expected to be the first to be commercialised. In particular, it is expected to be introduced most quickly to LPG carriers capable of handling ammonia cargo. In this respect, this joint development will be the first step in commercialisation of ammonia fuel and accelerate green transition pathway for the decarbonisation in maritime transport. HHI Group will leverage our expertise to lead decarbonisation related technologies and satisfy customers’ desire for maximising their profits with the achievement of GHG zero emission,” said Won Ho Joo, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of HHI.

EPS, MPA, HHI, and ABS signed an MoU in June for an ocean-going ammonia dual-fuel gas tanker. The vessel will be the first vessel fitted with MAN Energy Solutions G60 two-stroke dual-fuel ammonia engine.

In 2021, Korean Register (KR) issued two separate AiPs to KSOE, HHI and HMD for their designs of a 60,000cbm ammonia-fuelled ammonia carrier and a 38,000cbm ammonia-fuelled ammonia carrier/bunker vessel.
