FFI progresses green ammonia conversion project

FFI plans to take a final investment decision on converting IPL's Gibson Island ammonia facility in Brisbane Queensland to an export-oriented 400,000 tonnes/year green ammonia operation in 2023.

Production at the current ammonia production facility is scheduled to halt early in 2023. FFI has announced the signature of a framework agreement with the owner, IPL, governing the progress of the project until a final investment decision is taken.

The project would require the construction of a large scale 500MW electrolyser on the site, as well as the conversion of the plant to run on green hydrogen, rather than natural gas.

If approved, the company noted that the converted facility could supply up to 400,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia for export from 2025.

The Motorship has previously noted that FFI has been investigating a number of different methods to export hydrogen, ammonia and even toluene based hydrogen vectors from Australia to potential international customers. FFI has previously stated that it intends to ship up to 1.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen to the UK by the end of the decade.
