DSME inks LH2 containment MoU with McDermott subsidiary

The deal, which was announced on Thursday 13 October, will see DSME leverage CB&I’s experience in developing and installing land-based hydrogen storage facilities to develop large LH2 containment systems for marine applications. In addition to successfully delivering high-profile turnkey hydrogen storage projects, CB&I has a US-based Insulation Betterment Center that has extensive experience in optimising liquid hydrogen containment solutions. 

DSME has identified the deep-sea transportation of liquid hydrogen as a potential growth market, and expects the size of LH2 carriers to expand as demand for liquid hydrogen shipments expands. “The combination of the DSME’s shipbuilding technologies with the CB&I’s storage tank know-how will likely help South Korean shipyards retain their top status in the field of large liquid hydrogen carriers,” a DSME official said.

In addition to CB&I’s experience with developing large scale hydrogen storage facilities, CB&I has experience with green hydrogen production technologies. The Motorship notes that CB&I was awarded the contract to design and build two double-wall liquid hydrogen spheres for Plug Power’s Genesee County green hydrogen project in New York State, the largest green electrolyser project in North America.

DSME inked a collaboration agreement with Korean Register covering collaboration on the development of new propulsion systems capable of handling green fuels including ammonia and hydrogen in September 2022.
