Decision on first Suez green hydrogen plant in 2023

Egypt’s national hydrogen strategy, released close to COP 27, plans to increase low-emission hydrogen exports to 12-17 million tonnes per year by 2025. The plant will be owned, built and operated by a consortium comprising the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, Fertiglobe, Scatec and Orascom, and forms part of Egypt’s wider green hydrogen export strategy.

The 100 MW of electrolysers, powered by 260 MW of solar and wind, are located at Ain Sokhna which is perfectly positioned close to Suez opening up the possibility of using renewable electricity to develop an industrial hub near global shipping lanes.

Ayman Soliman, chief executive of The Sovereign Fund of Egypt said the project was delivering on Egypt’s promise to the world to create a regional hub for green energy and transforming the Suez Canal into a green corridor.

“Our pipeline of projects in the green energy field capitalises on Egypt’s ideal location with its unique renewables profile and proximity to markets with renewables deficits to realise our shared goal of emissions reduction,” he said.

The first and largest polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyser in Africa is currently undergoing tests as part of the first phase of the project.

The hydrogen tie-ins for up to 100 MW of electrolysis have already been installed at Fertiglobe’s two existing ammonia plants in Ain Sokhna.
