JERA inks ammonia MoUs with NYK and MOL

The study will involve the transport of ammonia for use as fuel to the Hekinan Thermal Power Plant, where JERA aims to begin using co-injection of fuel ammonia at concentrations of 20% in commercial operations in the late 2020s at Unit 4. 

JERA launched an international tender for the supply of fuel ammonia in February 2022, including an opportunity to participate in a fuel ammonia production project. JERA claims that if the project proceeds, it would represent the first development of an international fuel ammonia supply chain.

The MoU provides for the MOL and NYK to conduct independent studies with JERA into the development of fuel ammonia carriers suitable for domestic thermal power plants and receiving stations. The MoU also specifies that the fuel ammonia carriers project includes the installation and operation of marine engines that can operate on ammonia as fuel.

The MoU also encompasses a number of objectives relating to the establishment of a safe transportation system for ammonia, and a safe system for discharging fuel ammonia. This includes collaboration with relevant parties in order to encourage the development of rules relating to the discharge of fuel ammonia.
