Evolve Engine Reaches New Power Levels

The compact engine offers high response times, even at heavy load pick-up, flexibility in power and speed settings with single-stage and two-stage turbocharging options, and exchangeable power units.

The cylinder heads and design platform as a whole are adaptive to multi-fuel and different firing solutions, such that the engine is proposed as a safe investment in a volatile and uncertain fuel supply and cost context. It does not call for a commitment to any single fuel, enabling use of, or ready adaptation to, liquid fuel injection, dual-fuel and spark-ignited systems, such that the operational scope encompasses diesel, biodiesel, MDO, HFO, hydrogen, methanol, LNG, and CNG.

The 20EV23 employs pump-line-nozzle (PLN) fuel injection, for liquid fuels, or common-rail with micro-pilot fuel injection, for dual-fuel functionality. In its most potent form and employing two-stage turbocharging, the 230mm-bore engine produces 360kW per cylinder. The blend of raw unit power, multiple cylinders and cylinder geometry result in the acceleration properties so pertinent to the vessel types at which the design is aimed.

Incorporating single-stage turbocharging, the engine can be specified for 3,960kW at 720rpm, 4,125kW at 750rpm, 4,950kW at 900rpm, 5,500kW at 1,000rpm, and 6,600kW at 1,200rpm. The adoption of two-stage turbos extends the offering to models giving 6,000kW at 1,000rpm and 7,200kW at 1,200rpm.

The proprietary exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) provides for emission compliance in accordance with specific requirements, be it IMO Tier II, IMO Tier III, EU Stage V and EPA Tier 4. Modular EATS equipment features a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit with an integrated mixing pipe.

The Belgian manufacturer’s range is marketed under the ABC Engines brand. The Evolve platform development complements the company’s work on hydrogen marine engines within the BeHydro venture with compatriot shipowning organisation Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB).
