HMM places order 9 methanol-fuelled 9,000 teu newbuildings
The series of 9,000 teu container vessels is expected to be delivered between 2025 and 2026. HMM notes that the vessels are intended to be operated on the Asia-North/Latin America trade lanes and the Asia-India routes.
HMM notes that green shipping corridors between Busan in Korea and key ports in the US are also one of the potential routes to operate the new ships.
HMM noted that the value of the investment in newbuildings was equivalent to USD1.12 billion.
HMM has not committed to a timescale for the operation of the vessels on green methanol, but announced the signature of a series of supply agreement with methanol producers or suppliers alongside the newbuildings announcement.
The order is consistent with HMM’s medium-to-long-term strategy to enhance the competitiveness of its fleet in order to improve its position as a global shipping and logistics company.
