Oman advances green hydrogen projects

The agreements were signed with BP Alternative Energy Investments Ltd, local developer GEO, a green energy focused subsidiary of ACME, and consortiums representing the project developers in Duqm (Hyport Duqm) and Salalah (SalalaH2).

The agreements were signed by Salim al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and chairman of Hydrom. 

The six projects are expected to produce over 700,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen, converting 15GW of renewable power from solar and wind projects in Oman, at an estimated cost of around $20.0 billion. The projects envisage that the renewable hydrogen will be converted in energy carriers for export (which is understood to be either ammonia and methanol although a synthetic natural gas pilot is being undertaken in Oman).

Oman launched a first tender for renewable energy generation in November 2022, and is expected to announce the results by the end of April 2023. A second tender for renewable energy generation will be launched once the results of the first round are announced. 

Oman plans to increase its annual hydrogen production capacity to 1m tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030.
