UAE increases hydrogen ambitions in revised Energy Strategy

A further 0.4mn tpy of blue hydrogen will be generated by 2030. The UAE plans to increase domestic hydrogen production to 15 million tpy by 2050.

The country plans to locate two production hubs (or oases) in Ruwais, and the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abud Dhabi (KIZAD) by 2030, with the objective of adding a further three production hubs by 2050. The announcement also noted that the UAE’s renewable electricity generation capacity is planned to increase to 15GW from 3.2GW by 2030.

The revised Energy Strategy included an objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 25% by 2030, in the context of a broader target of reducing GHG emissions by 40% by the end of the decade.

Port Infrastructure

In January 2023, Masdar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Port of Amesterdam, terminal operators Zenith Energy and Evos Amsterdam, and sustainable aviation fuel supplier SkyNRG in January 2023 to collaborate on the design of onshore infrastructure connected with the UAE’s renewable hydrogen production plans, as well as the export of hydrogen to northwest Europe.

Other ammonia focused export projects are also under development.
