The licence agreement was marked by a ceremony attended by Bjarne Foldager, senior vice president, head of two-stroke, MAN Energy Solutions and Klaus Engberg, senior vice president and head of two-stroke licensing.

The licence marks the entry of a new engine builder into the market in China, although the two companies have an existing commercial relationship producing compressors for the petrochemical industry.

Hengli Engine is a subsidiary of the privately-owned group Hengli Heavy Industry, which acquired the assets of STX Dalian including its shipyard in July 2022, seven years after manufacturing at the shipyard had ceased in 2015.

A statement from Hengli Engine confirmed that Hengli Heavy Industry to expand shipbuilding at the shipyard on Changxing Island into vessels with alternative fuel types, referring to a transition to ”environmentally friendly ship power solutions for domestic and foreign shipowners”.

Hengli Heavy Industry announced the beginning of shipbuilding at Changxing in January 2023, and has signed a number of ship construction contracts subsequently.
