Bernhard Schulte orders LCO2 carrier for Northern Lights project

The vessel will be built at Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Co., Ltd (DSOC) to the same design as three LCO2 vessels currently on order and under construction at the shipyard. A third order with DSOC was placed in September 2023. With the fourth ship, the Northern Lights project will have the world’s largest dedicated CO2 shipping fleet.

The vessels are custom-built for the transportation of liquefied CO2, and will safely transport CO2 from Northern Lights’ customers across Northwest Europe to the CO2 receiving terminal at Øygarden, Norway before permanent geological sequestration.

The Motorship previously reported that DSOC had specified MAN B&W 7S35ME-GI dual-fuel engines in connection with the first two LCO2 carriers in the series, along with EcoEGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems.

The dual-fuel vessels include a number of innovative technologies in their design to reduce the CO2 emissions from shipping. Combined with other proven technologies, such as wind-assisted rotor sail and air lubrication, the ships will have around 34% lower carbon footprint compared to conventional ships running on marine fuel.
