Union Maritime selects WindWings for newbuilding

UML and CM Energy have reached an agreement to install three BARTech WindWings onboard a newbuilding LR tanker, which is currently being built at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) in China. The contract is the first order received by CM Energy for BAR Technologies’ wind-assisted propulsion solution. Six shipsets of BAR Technologies’ WindWings solution have been delivered as of late 2023. 

CM Energy and BAR Technologies signed a cooperation agreement relating to rigid sails technology in December 2023, when the two parties agreed to cooperate to promote the WindWings product. 

WindWings have successfully achieved fuel consumption and CO2 emission reductions, with potential savings of up to 1.5 tonnes of fuel and around 5 tonnes of CO2 per wing per day on typical global routes. WindWings operate in conjunction with a route optimisation system that adjusts the rigid sails based on wind conditions, vessel speed, without compromising the vessel’s speed.
