DNV validates bulk carrier wind power savings

When installed on the, BAR Technologies’ WindWings technology has been found to reduce main engine energy consumption by 32% per nautical mile on board the MV Pyxis Ocean, managed by MC Shipping Singapore and chartered by Cargill.

The MV Pyxis Ocean is the world’s first ship to be equipped with the WindWings technology and has sailed the Indian and Pacific Oceans and North and South Atlantic during testing between August 2023 and March 2024.

“It’s been a privilege to have the performance of our WindWings thoroughly assessed by DNV, who have been rigorous in their approach to assessing the data and applying impartial standards to the results,” said John Cooper, chief executive of BAR Technologies.

“The independent confirmation that WindWings are producing significant savings grants huge credibility to the technology. This gives our customers the reassurance they need.”

WindWings harness the power of the wind, reducing fuel consumption. Controlled by a touch panel on the bridge, a traffic light system guides the crew in raising or lowering the wings. Once raised, the wings automatically adjust to the optimal configuration based on real-time wind measurements.

BAR Technologies has verified the system as capable of average fuel savings of 1.5 tonnes per WindWing per day across all routes and seasons. In the future, Kamsarmax bulk carrier vessels, like the Pyxis Ocean, could carry three wings, further increasing the fuel savings and emissions reductions.
