IRS reviews autonomous navigation system

The technology demonstration took place on board MDL’s MT Andaman tug.

The IRS team reviewed the autonomy concept, system documentation, software quality documentation and a detailed risk assessment in accordance with IRS Guidelines for Remotely Operated Vessels and Autonomous Surface Vessels.

The navigation system software – which includes a remote control centre (RCC) – was tested using a simulation at the manufacturer’s development centre before harbour trials were conducted to test the remote control of the propulsion and steering systems as well as the monitoring of key machinery, navigation parameters, and the situational awareness system.

Sea trials were then run on 23 and 24 May, successfully demonstrating collision avoidance, alongside various emergency response measures such as handling the loss of primary controls and communication with the RCC.
