GCMD and Hanwha team up on decarbonisation

This collaboration will focus on alternative low- and zero-carbon fuels, energy efficiency technologies and onboard carbon capture systems. It is the first time GCMD has partnered with a South Korean shipbuilding firm, extending the company’s reach in the region.

“With Hanwha Ocean joining us as a strategic partner, I am excited about our combined efforts to advance decarbonisation,” said Professor Lynn Loo, chief executive of GCMD.

“Hanwha Ocean and GCMD are addressing different parts of the value chain, whether in enabling ammonia as a marine fuel or further closing gaps in the onboard carbon capture value chain.”

The partnership aims to develop ammonia-powered vessels, with Hanwha Ocean collaborating with its sibling companies, Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Power Systems.

“Hanwha is actively participating in every wave of green innovation, developing advanced technologies to provide carbon-neutral maritime solutions,” said Young Chang (James) Shon, chief technology officer of Hanwha Ocean.

“The time for action is now, and we are fully committed to driving meaningful change.”

GCMD recently demonstrated ammonia transfer operations in the Pilbara region, setting the stage for potential ammonia bunkering across multiple ports.

Both organisations are also focused on promoting onboard carbon capture and storage technology, with Hanwha Ocean receiving an approval in principle for its system on future LNG carriers.
