This significant milestone follows a successful joint development project aimed at overcoming the challenges associated with using ammonia as a marine fuel.

“The AiP reflects HD HHI’s dedication to developing sustainable, innovative solutions like ammonia-fuelled vessels, which will play a key role in reducing emissions and shaping the future of shipping,” said Seung-ho Jeon, senior executive vice president and chief technology officer of HD HHI.

The project focused on creating advanced safety features, including an optimised ammonia tank design, enhanced fire safety systems and improved ammonia release mitigation and boil-off gas handling systems.

Ammonia, while promising for reducing carbon emissions, poses unique risks, including toxicity at low concentrations and the potential for nitrous oxide emissions, a potent greenhouse gas. Any leaks could create hazardous zones, particularly on container ships where safe upper deck areas are critical.

To address these risks, the project defined and analysed fuel pipe leakage scenarios through gas dispersion analyses. Results demonstrated that conventional systems could lead to dangerous ammonia concentrations, but the enhanced mitigation measures significantly reduced hazardous areas, paving the way for the wider commercialisation of ammonia-fuelled shipping.

“With new technological solutions, alongside rigorous safety procedures, ammonia can reach its full potential as one of the most promising green fuels,” said Vidar Dolonen, DNV regional manager Korea and Japan.
