bound4blue lands Maersk Tankers contract

This agreement is the company’s largest to date for wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), with bound4blue set to install 20 type-approved eSAIL® suction sails across five MR tankers in 2025 and 2026.

Maersk Tankers selected bound4blue’s eSAIL® solution in collaboration with green technology partner Njord, which assessed various WAPS options to maximise both environmental and commercial gains for these vessels. The autonomous eSAIL® technology functions by pulling air across an aerodynamic surface, creating lift and high propulsive efficiency that cuts down fuel consumption, operational expenses, and emissions.

Each of the Maersk Tankers vessels in the project—Maersk Tacoma, Maersk Tampa, Maersk Tangier, Maersk Teesport, and Maersk Tokyo—will be fitted with four eSAIL® units, expected to yield double-digit percentage reductions in both fuel use and CO2 emissions.

bound4blue’s CEO and co-founder José Miguel Bermúdez hailed the order as a “key milestone,” noting that Maersk Tankers’ commitment highlights the proven benefits of the eSAIL® technology in meeting regulatory requirements for emissions reduction under CII and FuelEU frameworks. Bermúdez emphasised that the eSAIL® system is designed to perform reliably in challenging conditions, making it well-suited for efficient, safe operations on tankers.

The agreement with Maersk Tankers is part of a strong year for bound4blue, which has also attracted orders from major industry players including Klaveness Combination Carriers, Eastern Pacific Shipping, Odfjell, Marflet Marine, Amasus, and Louis Dreyfus Company, further accelerating the adoption of wind-assisted propulsion solutions across the sector.
