World’s first ammonia bulkers and tankers

These will be the world’s first ammonia dual-fuel Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers.

The deal will see the two jointly own and charter three Capesize bulkers, and jointly time-charter six chemical tankers, two of which run on ammonia with the remaining four being ammonia-ready.

The bulkers are being built at CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding for delivery in 2026-27 whilst the chemical tankers are being built at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng for delivery in 2028-29.

Ammonia is drawing worldwide attention as a next-generation clean energy source, and the ocean shipping industry is accelerating its push to use ammonia as a fuel.

The MOL Group also intends to adopt ammonia in its MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2 to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
