Wärtsilä unveils onboard CCS

The company claims the system can reduce CO₂ emissions from vessels by up to 70%, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward net-zero shipping.

“CCS is a game-changer for the maritime industry,” said Håkan Agnevall, president and chief executive of Wärtsilä.

“Ahead of shipping’s net-zero targets, this new technology complements ongoing efforts to dramatically reduce emissions and prevent stranded assets.”

The launch follows successful testing onboard Solvang’s Clipper Eris, a 21,000 m³ ethylene carrier equipped with Wärtsilä’s full-scale CCS system. In operation since February 2025, the installation captures emissions from all exhaust sources, building on a range of Wärtsilä technologies already in use on board.

“While the shipping sector continues to explore options for lessening its environmental impact, CCS provides a significant shortcut for achieving meaningful sustainability,” said Edvin Endresen, chief executive of Solvang.

Wärtsilä has developed the solution since 2019, operating a test facility in Moss, Norway, which captures 10 tonnes of CO₂ daily. The system is adaptable to multiple fuel types and vessel configurations, both for newbuilds and retrofits.

“Collaboration has been key,” Agnevall added. “We congratulate Solvang for their vision in bringing CCS to their fleet.”

Wärtsilä estimates the cost of captured CO₂ at €50 to €70 per tonne, with scalable systems designed to work alongside existing emission control technologies.
