LR verifies Anemoi Rotor Sail system
The verification, conducted by Lloyd’s Register Advisory, confirms the accuracy of Anemoi’s methodology for calculating fuel and emissions savings, marking a significant milestone for the wind propulsion industry.
“This independent verification builds trust across the industry, showcasing that our technology delivers tangible fuel savings and emissions reductions,” said Clare Urmston, chief executive of Anemoi Marine Technologies.
The testing took place on the TR Lady, a Kamsarmax bulk carrier owned by funds managed by Tufton Investment Management and chartered by Cargill.
During the testing, the TR Lady transited various regions including the Indian Ocean, South Atlantic, North and South Pacific and Southern Ocean, navigating some of the world’s busiest shipping routes such as the Strait of Malacca.
Data from eight consecutive laden and ballast legs was analysed to establish a reliable and repeatable benchmark for wind-assisted propulsion performance.
The results show an average of 1.9 tonnes of fuel savings per day and 7.0 tonnes of CO2 emissions reductions per day, corresponding to a 9.1% net savings in fuel and emissions.
This result closely aligns with Anemoi’s original prediction of 10% savings. On some routes, such as a 22-day voyage across the North Pacific, savings reached as high as 21%.
Testing continues on larger Rotor Sails, which are expected to deliver even greater performance.
