GeoServe, from bunker procurement to fleet management
GeoServe was founded in 2019 by Kapoor and a few colleagues, all seasoned maritime professionals with two decades of industry experience. They began in bunker procurement and port cost management, growing from a team of six to around 200.
Today, GeoServe manages digital services for more than 1 000 vessels across eight countries via a single platform, GeoOne—a unified voyage operations suite designed to connect bunker, port call, laytime, performance and emissions into one seamless system.
As Sanjay puts it, “you make or break a voyage in the way you operate them, the ships,” yet voyage operations remain fragmented. Commercial pressure causes inefficiencies and leakage. “Digitisation has to be hand in glove, and the process is still very, very old fashioned in the way it’s been executed,” adding that shipping is a very relationship driven business.
While “there are a few digital platforms available doing this, the missing link has been the service connect … shipping is still very human.”
GeoOne is likened by Kapoor to Microsoft’s Office 365 for voyage ops, centralising information, eliminating duplication and delivering a single source of truth.
Bolting on a believer
In December 2024 GeoServe acquired UK-based SHINC, integrating its AI-powered laytime platform into GeoOne. “We managed laytime anyway, process still old fashioned. We saw SHINC which married into what we were doing. Plugged it into the system.”
GeoServe has also connected to DNV Veracity to cut redundant reporting and verify emissions data. “If you’re managing ships performances and optimization, emission management is just a derivative of that,” Sanjay explains. “The data that we get is to the T—we just need the verification … previously you had a lot of toing and froing … that takes a lot of time.”
Looking ahead to regulation and alternative fuels, GeoServe launched its FuelEU Maritime module. “We have built a platform which is very engaging and very intuitive with the client, where you are able to see … what is your negative balance? … what would your requirement be … either paying the penalty or going for another fuel?” Kapoor says. “We are managing our clients exposure on FuelEU Maritime, and this is only going to increase with every passing year. … This marries … very well with a bunker procurement business.”
GeoServe’s wider vision, says Kapoor, is to do “more with less”. “We want to remove the chaos that is there in the way voyage operations is executing … to create a system which can future proof you for decision making.” He observes that today’s operations often feel like clouded emergency response rather than control: “I want voyage operations to be in control.”
On the slow shift towards alternative fuels, he admits it’s “chicken and egg”, adding that for a shipowner to commit to additional investment on ships running on alternative fuels, they need to be sure the demand is there, as figures can run into the tens of millions. Despite executing its first delivery of marine biofuel blend back in 2023, Kapoor maintains that it remains very much a transitional fuel.
GeoServe’s evolution, from bunker-specialist start-up to orchestrator of an end-to-end digital voyage system, mirrors the maritime industry’s own shift towards integration, efficiency and environmental compliance—helping operators seize back control from fragmented workflows. Powerful tools like GeoOne, SHINC and DNV Veracity, coupled with regulatory foresight, leave them and their clients better prepared for the future ahead.
