VentoFoils installed on chemical tanker

The ATEX-certified suction wing units were installed on board the M/T Jutlandia Swan in just four days at Rotterdam Offshore Group, marking a significant milestone in wind-assisted propulsion for tankers.

“This is the fourth tanker to sail with VentoFoils,” said Chiel de Leeuw, chief commercial officer at Econowind. “It shows how our suction wing technology is gaining traction in the tanker segment. Thanks to our experience and ATEX-approved systems, we know what’s required for these vessels.”

The 124m M/T Jutlandia Swan drew inspiration from a similar project on a Chemship parcel tanker. Foundation work was completed earlier during a scheduled drydock in Turkey, allowing for a fast and efficient installation in Rotterdam.

The VentoFoil system is currently under classification with Bureau Veritas. Early projections estimate a reported 10% improvement in the vessel’s energy efficiency existing ship index and a 3% contribution to FuelEU Maritime compliance.

“Wind-assisted ship propulsion has clear potential – but its real value depends on how well it integrates into daily operations,” said Kristian Larsen, technical director at Uni-Tankers. “Now we’ll be able to test how these sails behave at sea, what they mean for fuel efficiency, and how the crew can work with them in practice.”

The Jutlandia Swan will now serve as a live testbed, further positioning wind propulsion as a practical tool for reducing emissions in tanker operations.
