Wind propulsion breakthrough for tankers

The 250-metre vessels, designed by SDARI and built by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry, will each feature two 37.5m WindWings. Steel cutting is set for November 2025, with delivery expected in early 2027.

“Fitting WindWings to tankers of this type breaks new ground for wind propulsion,” said John Cooper, chief executive of BAR Technologies.

“It proves the technology can scale and slot alongside dual-fuel systems as a serious, practical tool for decarbonising even the most energy-intensive vessel types.”

Flagged under the Marshall Islands and classed by Bureau Veritas, Suzuka and Long Beach demonstrate WindWings’ compliance with international safety and performance standards. This latest installation builds on the successful integration of WindWings on board the UML-operated Brands Hatch.

According to BAR, the WindWings will cut daily fuel use by 3 tonnes, saving about 2,300 tonnes of CO₂ per year per ship, the equivalent of removing 500 cars from the road.
