The certification, issued by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system, verifies compliance with stringent criteria across feedstock traceability, GHG emissions accounting, and social responsibility. The Chifeng project’s successful audit signals that its green ammonia production meets internationally recognised standards for environmental sustainability.

Located in Inner Mongolia, the facility is powered entirely by renewable electricity and produces liquid ammonia for both domestic and export markets. The project is reported to be the first green hydrogen-ammonia plant of its scale to reach commercial operation and is designed to integrate wind and solar power with battery storage and chemical conversion systems in real time.

The Chifeng plant’s ISCC Plus certification is seen as a significant step in advancing the viability of green ammonia as a decarbonisation fuel across sectors including shipping. With increasing regulatory pressure, particularly in Europe, certified low-emission ammonia products are likely to play a growing role in supporting alternative fuel strategies in maritime transport and beyond.

According to Envision Energy, the project offers a potential model for lifecycle carbon management in large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production, addressing technical integration challenges and contributing to broader efforts in emissions reduction and climate governance.
