Training launched for alternative marine fuels

Designed for both entry-level and senior maritime personnel, the new frameworks provide the foundation for developing comprehensive training programmes focused on safety, competency and operational readiness.

In addition to the core frameworks, MJTTF will release guidelines for general familiarisation programmes targeting seafarers and key shore-based personnel not specifically addressed under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978.

The publicly accessible frameworks aim to support maritime regulators and administrations in shaping future certification schemes, classroom education, simulation assessments and onboard training standards.

The initiative stems from the ‘Baseline Training Frameworks for Seafarers in Decarbonisation’ project, a joint effort by MJTTF and the IMO Secretariat, delivered in partnership with Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and the World Maritime University. The work complements the IMO’s ongoing review of the STCW Convention and provides critical input into global training standards for alternative fuels.

The launch coincides with LR’s Maritime Human Capital Management Forum during London International Shipping Week 2025, underscoring the vital role of training, safety and the human element in the maritime energy transition.
