DNV approves SMR vessel design

The vessel concept applies SMR technology to a large container ship capable of 24-knot operation, integrating a supercritical CO2-based power generation system for enhanced thermal efficiency and a smaller machinery footprint.

DNV reviewed the design in line with SOLAS Chapter VIII and the IMO Code of Safety for Nuclear Merchant Ships, confirming its compliance with international safety standards.

“This SMR-powered container vessel concept represents a key milestone in our efforts to explore alternative fuels for decarbonising shipping,” said Dr Kwangpil Chang, chief technology officer of HD KSOE.

“Our design prioritises safety through an innovative shielding and containment system to ensure reactor and vessel survivability even in extreme scenarios.”

DNV and HD KSOE collaborated closely throughout the project, including a HAZID workshop in Oslo in May 2025 to assess potential risks and strengthen safety measures.

“Shifting environmental requirements and advances in technology are reigniting interest in nuclear propulsion,” said Geir Dugstad of DNV. “This AiP marks an important first step in establishing the technical verification process for nuclear-powered cargo vessels.”
