Jotun anti-fouling sets efficiency record

The achievement sets a new benchmark for hull performance and fuel efficiency.

“SeaQuantum X200 has a 15-year track record with around 2,500 vessels worldwide, consistently maximising hull performance,” said Habibe Escobar, category manager for Jotun’s SeaQuantum brand.

“Now, DNV verification confirms our data – this anti-fouling really pushes the boundaries of what’s possible.”

The verification follows ISO 19030, evaluating in-service performance across four years of a five-year dry-docking cycle. Data from 41 medium- to high-activity vessels showed that, unlike the industry average speed loss of 5.9%, SeaQuantum X200 keeps loss to just 1.0%.

“This is a game-changer for operational efficiency,” said Olav Rognebakke, DNV head of Hydrodynamics & Stability. “Lower hull resistance over time means real fuel savings and reduced CO2 emissions.”

Tests found that a 1% speed loss corresponds to a 3% drop in hydrodynamic efficiency, compared with 17.7% industry average, translating to 14.7% fuel savings and significant carbon reductions.

“To maintain 1% speed loss, only minimal power is needed, whereas 5.9% speed loss demands a 3-times higher effort,” explained Morten Sten Johansen, Jotun global category director, Hull Performance.

Earlier this year, DNV verified 11.1 million tons of avoided CO2 emissions for all Jotun-coated vessels in 2024, worth roughly US$2 billion in fuel.

“These verifications show that SeaQuantum X200 delivers measurable value, not just performance at sea, but savings and emissions reduction that matter to our customers and the planet,” Johansen concluded.
