Alfa Laval and Hanwha partner on ammonia

The partnership combines Alfa Laval’s technical expertise in ammonia fuel systems with Hanwha Ocean Ecotech’s marine technology capabilities. Both companies intend to pursue joint business development and pilot installations, targeting early market opportunities in the growing alternative fuel sector.

“This MOU is more than just technical cooperation – it represents a strategic partnership to secure leadership in Korea and Asia’s sustainable shipbuilding market,” said Young-Gu Choi, managing director of Alfa Laval Korea.

“By combining our strengths, we aim to accelerate the decarbonisation of global shipping with safe and reliable ammonia fuel solutions.”

The collaboration will draw on Alfa Laval’s ammonia fuel supply system and ammonia release mitigation system, while Hanwha will contribute extensive system engineering and integration experience.

“Partnering with Alfa Laval is a significant opportunity to deliver safer and more efficient ammonia fuel systems to our customers,” said Chang-Keun Lee, chief executive of Hanwha Ocean Ecotech.

“Through pilot projects and subsequent commercial projects, we will maximise synergies and bring greater value to the maritime industry.”

The MOU was signed during Kormarine 2025 and is part of Alfa Laval’s broader involvement in ammonia-powered shipping. Other initiatives include partnerships with WinGD and K Shipbuilding, which have focused on developing fuel systems and boilers, and mitigation technologies as the industry explores the commercial use of ammonia.
