Schottel propulsion and leadership transition underline commitment to naval and commercial markets

The vessel (pictured) is intended to replace existing Polish Navy rescue units and will markedly enhance submarine crew rescue capabilities while also strengthening the protection of subsea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. Launch is planned for 2027, with delivery to the Navy scheduled for 2029.

According to PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, the focus of the project is on reliable performance under the demanding conditions typical of the Baltic. The propulsion solution from Schottel has been selected to provide the precise manoeuvrability required for submarine rescue operations and dynamic positioning tasks, ensuring that the vessel can operate safely and effectively during complex missions.

Ratownik has been designed to carry out highly demanding rescue operations, including diving support with accurate dynamic positioning. To meet these requirements, the vessel will be fitted with two Schottel EcoPeller azimuth thrusters of the SRE 560 type. These robust, hydrodynamically optimised units are intended to maximise the vessel’s DP capability while also offering low noise and vibration levels, an important factor for stealth operations and the effective use of onboard sonar systems.

In addition, the propulsion package includes two Schottel TransverseThrusters type STT 3 to enhance manoeuvrability in harbour and during offshore operations. The redundant configuration increases overall operational safety, ensuring continued performance even in critical situations. A Schottel Retractable RudderPropeller SRP 260 R will provide auxiliary or emergency propulsion. Retracted within the hull during transit, it can be deployed when additional thrust or improved DP performance is required. All propulsion components are specifically adapted for operation in ice-prone waters, reflecting the vessel’s intended operating environment.

With an overall length of around 96 m and a displacement of approximately 6,500 tonnes, Ratownik will be among the largest rescue vessels operating in the Baltic Sea. The ship is designed to work in conjunction with unmanned systems and rescue helicopters and will be equipped with cranes, remotely operated vehicles and a firefighting system. A modular design allows the vessel to be adapted to a wide range of mission-specific requirements, setting a new benchmark for naval rescue capability in the region.

The delivery of this high-profile naval project coincides with a significant leadership transition at Schottel. On 1 January 2026, Roland Schwandt assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of Schottel, succeeding Stefan Kaul as part of a long-planned and orderly succession process. Christian Bock has been appointed Deputy CEO. Stefan Kaul will in future concentrate on production and materials management at the company’s German manufacturing sites in Dörth and Wismar, while continuing to support the new management team with his extensive experience.

The succession plan was initiated at an early stage and coordinated closely with all parties involved. Both Roland Schwandt and Christian Bock are long-standing members of the management team, ensuring continuity in the company’s strategic direction. Schwandt joined Schottel in 2000 as a project manager and progressed through a number of senior roles, including responsibility for the Tug & Offshore Energy segment, global sales as vice president sales and most recently Deputy CEO and head of customer business from January 2024.

Christian Bock began his career in 2006 at SSPC in Suzhou, formerly a Schottel production site in China. After eleven years in senior finance roles, he moved to the company’s headquarters in Spay, where he became Director Controlling & IT before taking on the position of vice president finance & administration.

Stefan Kaul joined Schottel in 1989 and held management positions in research and hydrodynamics before becoming Chief Technology Officer in 2007. Appointed CEO in 2018, he has overseen a period of sustained growth and consolidation of the company’s market position. The industrial holding company Schottel Industries GmbH has expressed its appreciation for his contribution and welcomed his continued involvement in a key operational role.
