Hydroniq Coolers wins LDA contract for its new SOVs

The scope of supply covers Hydroniq Coolers’ Rack seawater cooling system, which is integrated into the hull below the main engine room. The system uses seawater to control temperatures in engines and auxiliary equipment, supporting reliable operation of critical onboard systems.

The Rack incorporates several fuel- and energy-saving features, including frequency-controlled seawater pumps that operate with a low pressure drop and therefore reduced power demand. A chilled-water element shortens compressor running time, while a heat-recovery function allows surplus heat to be reused, contributing to overall energy efficiency.

The design also extends cleaning intervals and reduces the time required when maintenance is needed. Dry-docking is not necessary, as the coolers can be withdrawn from beneath the engine room, even while the vessel remains in operation. According to Hydroniq Coolers, the system combines the space and energy efficiency of box coolers with the consistent thermal performance of plate heat exchangers, while offering improved accessibility for maintenance.

Manufacture and assembly of the Rack seawater coolers will take place at Hydroniq Coolers’ facilities at Ellingsøy, near Ålesund, Norway. The contract value has not been disclosed.

ZPMC has been selected by Louis Dreyfus Armateurs to construct the two SOVs, with design work carried out by SALT Ship Design. Intended for offshore wind farm operation and maintenance, the vessels will feature four azimuth thrusters to enhance manoeuvrability and dynamic positioning capability. They will also be equipped with an advanced gangway system and a 3D motion-compensated crane, while significant emphasis has been placed on accommodation standards to improve comfort for technicians and crew.
