LR issues hydrogen generation guidance
The new guidance responds to growing interest from shipowners, shipyards and technology developers seeking practical pathways to adopt hydrogen as part of their decarbonisation strategies.
“Clear guidance is essential for emerging technologies,” commented Thomas Bayer, lead specialist fuel cell technology at Lloyd’s Register.
“The industry cannot afford to stand still while formal regulations are developed. Our Guidance Notes provide the clarity needed to move projects from concept to delivery.”
Hydrogen is viewed as a critical fuel for achieving long-term emissions reductions in shipping, but progress has been slowed by limited supply, the lack of global bunkering infrastructure and the technical challenges associated with onboard hydrogen storage.
Onboard hydrogen generation, therefore, is increasingly viewed as a transitional solution. By producing hydrogen directly from alternative fuels such as LNG, methanol or ammonia, vessels can avoid the need for compressed or liquefied hydrogen storage and reduce reliance on future hydrogen supply chains.
However, producing hydrogen onboard introduces additional safety and regulatory challenges, including the handling of multiple gases or low-flashpoint fuels and the absence of mature international rules. LR says its Guidance Notes set out practical requirements for system design, safety and onboard installation, recognising the need to adapt land-based hydrogen generation technologies to the marine environment.
LR recently published the latest report in its Fuel for thought series, providing a comprehensive assessment of hydrogen’s potential role in maritime decarbonisation.
