Econowind targets deepsea wind propulsion
The new system builds on the company’s established 3-series technology and is aimed at shipowners seeking practical solutions to cut fuel consumption and meet tightening environmental regulations. The move follows the sale of more than 150 VentoFoil units across shortsea and regional markets.
“The 3-series has shown that our technology works in daily operations,” said Chiel de Leeuw, chief commercial officer at Econowind. “With the 5-series, we are bringing that proven concept into the deepsea market.”
The first unit is set to be installed on a vessel operated by Boomsma Shipping later this summer, marking the commercial debut of the larger system. The order signals continued confidence from the operator, which has previously deployed VentoFoils.

“As a returning customer, we are pleased to use VentoFoils again on our vessels, now in the form of the 5-series,” said Johan Boomsma of Boomsma Shipping. “Wind propulsion has proven its value both economically and environmentally. With high fuel prices adding to the urgency, this is a logical next step for us.”
Boomsma added that energy efficiency remains central to its strategy, noting that eight newbuild vessels will be delivered wind-ready, with the first, Frisian Future, entering service in May.
Econowind is also scaling up production in Asia to align with major shipbuilding centres, enabling easier integration of the larger units into newbuild projects.
The VentoFoil system uses boundary-layer suction to generate additional thrust from wind, reducing engine load and fuel consumption. Designed for operational flexibility, the units can be controlled from the bridge and tilted when required.
